iPhone 4S Already 2nd Most Popular Camera On Flickr

It may seem like a strange way to judge the success of a smartphone, but the charts Flickr releases of the most popular devices used for taking photos for the social imaging site are interesting nevertheless.

iPhone 4S Flickr

Apple’s iPhones have always done well when it comes to this particular metric – the iPhone 4 is currently the camera people most use when taking photos for Flickr, not just the most popular smartphone. Think about that for a second and then get back to us when it has sunk in. Done? Right.

With that in mind it was possibly only a matter of time until the iPhone 4S found itself sitting in a spot high on such graphs from Flickr, and less than two months after its release to the public the smartphone has done just that.

According to the latest charts from Flickr’s camera finder web page, Apple’s iPhone 4S is now the second most used cameraphone out there when it comes to uploaded photographs. In fact, Apple’s last four generations of iPhone – iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3 – currently make up four of the top five handsets. Pretty impressive, really.

Google’s Android for its part has just the one handset in that top five, with HTC’s EVO 4G being the one and only representative of Google’s mobile operating system.

The quality of photographs kicked out by the iPhone 4 and 4S handsets is indeed extremely good, and not just for a smartphone. Images taken with the two, and particularly the latter of the models, have led many to suggest that the end of the point-and-shoot is near. While we think there will always be a market for such cameras, it is hard to deny that there is a shift taking place right now, and if we were the heads of the camera companies right now, we’d be taking notice.

While the iPhone 4S may be some way from knocking the iPhone 4 from the top spot, we’re not brave nor stupid enough to suggest that it won’t happen at some point. That said, with the iPhone 4 now available at a knockdown price, Apple will continue to sell them by the truckload moving forward.

It’s a license to print money, that iPhone!

Android 4.0 ICS Keyboard Now Available For Older Devices; This Is The Best Keyboard We’ve Ever Used – Download Now

Folks looking for a new keyboard for their Android device need not to look any further: the critically acclaimed keyboard from Android’s latest release – 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – has been unofficially released in the form an APK. We’ll be discussing its performance and give away the download link at the end. Check it out after the jump!

If you’ve been following the latest news, you’ll know that the Galaxy Nexus – the first ever Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based smartphone – was released in select markets a few days ago. The phone has received critical acclaim, mostly due to ICS being a significant improvement for Android. ICS’ stock keyboard, especially, has been noted for being unbelievably good for text input – finally rivaling keyboards offered by WP7 and iOS.

We’ve tested the keyboard on a Samsung Galaxy S II on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and can confirm that works as claimed. It is simply a joy to type on. The keyboard itself is a little smaller than what came with my GSII but is much, much more accurate with text input. It comes with efficient auto-correction and the other usual features such as auto-capitalization are also here. I’ve been using it all day and besides this one small bug which causes it to force close (double-tapping Caps Lock), it is the best keyboard this writer have ever used and the fact that it is free sweetens the deal. Hopefully this bug will be squashed soon.

If you’re interested, Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard can be download from the link embedded below. To install the APK, be sure to have Unknown sources enabled from Settings Applications.

To set it up, go to Settings Language and keyboard. Enable Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard from the bottom and then choose Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard from Select input method.

Let us know what you think of it in the comments section over on our Facebook page.

Download Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard:

ICS keyboard is also available from Android Market. We’ve tested the MediaFire link APK only, but Market version is the same, according to reports, so you can get that as well.

Note: For the security conscious, rest assured that the APK is safe as it doesn’t require any unnecessary permissions to the device.

Samsung Galaxy S III May Run On Quad-Core Processor [UPDATED]

If the rumor mill carries anything of significance, Samsung’s yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S III could boast an impressive quad-core Exynos 4412 CPU – a move which would really throw down the gauntlet to rival manufacturers.

AndroidAndMe, a site dedicated to covering all things Droid, has done its homework on the device and uncovered information buried in the “Linux Kernel Archives” which seems to suggest that the Korean electronics giant is already at testing stage of the Exynos 4412.

As well as being a lot faster than anything else on the market, it would be more economical with battery consumption – a fundamental aspect of any smartphone. Many current smartphones are home to some great on paper features; but in reality, the battery dies within a few hours – rendering the device useless to power-users.

It would be a relatively significant upgrade from the Galaxy S II’s dual-core 1.2 GHz Exynos 4210 processor, and would use 30% less power than its predecessor.

Citing a tipster, AndroidAndMe reckons Samsung has a few devices set for release early next year that will “blow minds” and will be “big step past the Galaxy Nexus class, in every way,” painting a very exciting picture for the opening quarter of 2012.

The post also toys with the idea of an improved GPU this time around. The Galaxy S II’s Exynos 4210 was armed with the ARM Mali-400 GPU which, at time of release, was the fastest going, but has since been surpassed by Apple’s A5 chip and its PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.

Whatever the case, Samsung will be keen to topple bitter rivals Apple in the battle for the smartphone crown. The Cupertino company has made a lot of noise with its Siri-wielding iPhone 4S, but a quad-core processor would certainly test the fruit company’s resolve.

The alarming exchange of mainly patent-based lawsuits between the two has seen previous business ties completely strained as both try to work independently of each other. It will certainly be a battle worth watching, and all will be covered here at Redmond Pie in due course.

In the meantime, and back on the subject of the purported quad-core S III, would you buy it? Would sheer power and the promise of Ice Cream Sandwich entice you over the bells and whistles of Siri and the brand-new iOS 5?

Leave your thoughts on our Facebook or Google+ pages!

(source GitKernel)

Update: According to a very reliable and trusted source, prototypes of the Samsung Galaxy S III do NOT feature quad-core processors. Our source has inspected the current prototypes, thus we can only presume that the final product – which will probably release early 2012 - will too be bereft of a quad-core processor.

Apple Announces Black Friday 2011 Sale For November 25th Across The World

As soon as the Thanksgiving turkey has been consumed, many will prepare for the next holiday of sorts, Black Friday. This year it falls on November 25th and will be the day where many retailers go from being in the red, to making a profit for the year and being in the black. On Black Friday morning, stores will open early offering amazing deals to those who were lucky enough to be first in line.

Black Friday

Apple is no exception. Just like last year they have added a teaser banner to their online store, as noted by MacStories:

“Mark your calendar now, and come back to the Apple Online Store for the special one-day event. You’ll discover amazing iPad, iPod and Mac gifts for everyone on your list.”

The banner is currently found on a few of Apple’s international websites such as in Australia and Italy, but not on the US site. Yet.

Now, before you get too excited, remember that Apple’s discounts are relatively small compared to those offered by electronic retail stores.  The good news is the deals usually last the entire day. Another plus, you won’t have to wake up early and stand in long lines. That is, unless you want to. If you’d like to take your new iPod, iPad or Mac home the same day you purchase it, you can walk in to a US store and receive the same Black Friday discount found online.

Just like last year, Apple has been tight-lipped with details.  Nonetheless, looking at the deals offered last year may give you a good idea of the kind of deals Apple may offer for Black Friday this year:

iMac: $101 off all models

MacBook Pro: $101 off all models

MacBook Air: $101 off all models

iPod Nano: $11 off 8GB, $21 off 16GB

iPad: ($41 off all models)

iPod touch: ($21-$41 depending on model)

Apple is likely to offer the same range of discounts to their line of iDevices this year, but we will have to wait until Turkey Day before we find out the specifics.

If you are not a fan of early wake up times and long lines, you are not alone. Check out what deals are offered online during Black Friday, the results may surprise you. It is such a growing trend that even the next day, known as Cyber Monday, has specials.

Google Search For iPad, iPhone Updated With An Overhauled UI And Features – Download Now

Google has just released an update to its coveted iOS search app, with improved iPad UI as well as full-screen mode for the iPhone.

Google Search iPhone iPad

Google and Web search are synonymous terms, and although we suspect Apple would rather keep influences from the Big G as minimal as possible, there’s no denying – no matter what you may thing of Android, Gmail, and the like – no company provides a better search infrastructure than Google’s.

Eric Schmidt’s company has been working tirelessly throughout the year to update its mobile apps, and having tested the latest run of updates out on both an iPad 2 and iPhone 4, we thankfully have no major bugs or issues to report.

The interface improvements for the iPad bear remnants to the design patterns seen across the board with Google’s web-based services. On the main search page, you’ll now find four prominent grey icon shortcuts to History, Applications, Voice Search, and Goggles. Additionally, you can now browse through pages simultaneously with the side-by-side implementation – really taking advantage of the device’s 9.5 x 7.3 inch screen.

When using any web-based app on a tablet in particular, full-screen browsing is a key element to the overall experience. With this in mind, Google Search for iPad’s full-screen browsing mode has been slightly improved for image searches. To round up the key iPad improvements, History is now much easier to navigate, whilst Google Instant and Instant Previews (essential to many browsers – including this one) are now featured, saving those vital few seconds.

Aside from the aforementioned full-screen feature, the changelog for the iPhone version lists the clichéd bug fixes, but then again, we shouldn’t overlook them too hastily; after all, improvements are improvements!

As usual, it’s free, and you can grab it through this link, or of course via the App Store icon on your iPhone or iPad device.

With Apple purported to be working on its own Maps iteration (in its ongoing quest to keep everything in-house), Google will need to keep the updates and improvements coming in thick and fast to cement its place amongst Apple’s loyal army of devotees.
