Apple Tested 3D iPad 3 Prototypes, Says A New Report

Although we know precious little of what’s in store for Apple’s next tablet offering, that hasn’t stopped various rumors and speculation circulating around the Web.

iPad 3D Prototype

Some – in fact, many – were left disappointed by the iPad 2′s rather negligible set of updates. Sure, it had a dual-core processor,  but both added cameras were pretty poor; just as well, since the Retina Display we’d become accustomed to with the iPhone 4 was mysteriously absent.

For a while, it seemed as though Apple would be making up for it with the third addition to its tablet roster. Rumors had been prevalent for a large portion of 2011, dating back as far as May, with one Hollywood insider at the time stating the likelihood of a 3D iPad 3 as a “dead-cert”.

A mere month later, a prototype iPad was spotted in Taiwan sporting a 3D display, seemingly adding credibility to the rumors.

BusinessInsider, citing a reliable source, notes that Apple has indeed toyed with 3D screens. “The iPad 3 was often called iPad 3D in early prototypes,” so said the source. Apparently though, Apple decided not to go ahead with a 3D screen since, again quoting the source, “they didn’t want it to be a gimmick.”

The tipster also gave a little more insight to the type of 3D screen Apple toyed with, noting that it would have been similar to the Nintendo 3DS in that users would not have been required to sport those notably un-cool 3D glasses.

Despite the prospect of an iPad 3D seeming dead in the water, that isn’t to say the fruit company has ditched the idea altogether – despite fearing the gimmicky label.

In fact, the tipster hinted that 3D will likely make a return at some point – but only when it is “useful”. Disney is supposedly 3D-fying its expansive catalogue ready for that day – if and when it does arrive.

Apple isn’t renowned for being an early adopter of new technologies (see 4G / LTE), preferring to let rivals discover and iron out the limitations. We shouldn’t  read to much into the fact that the Cupertino recently filed a patent for a 3D screen just a couple of months ago, either, since it has done this on many occasions for products which have never reached fruition.

3D iPad in future – gimmick, or game-changer? Discuss!

iOS 5.0.2 For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Reportedly Delayed Due To Memory Leak Issues

Although we were expecting Tim Cook and his collection of finely-trained specialists to fix those lingering battery issues by this week, it seems as though we’re going to have to wait just a little longer.

Granted, there hasn’t been a repeat of the antennagate farce of 2010′s iPhone/iOS update season, but this year’s belated release hasn’t exactly followed the smooth, uniform schedule we often associate with Apple.

We should really have seen it coming. After all, with several pre-release beta versions of iOS 5 before end-user release, it was clear that the fruit company was struggling to piece together the rather extensive jigsaw of new features which included iCloud, iTunes Match, iOS 5, iPhone 4S.

Macerkopf, the site which appeared to confirm the all-remedying iOS 5.0.2 update as being released this week, has dramatically U-turned by stating that it “probably” will not rear its head in the coming days, whilst not really offering an ETA, either.

The site states that whilst the battery issues have been sorted out (where have we heard that before?), there are ongoing issues with memory leaks which require a little more scrutiny, so rather than have to release 5.0.3 almost immediately after, Apple has apparently decided to spend a little time and sort out all major issues. How noble of them.

The battery problems haven’t affected anywhere near as many people as the iPhone 4′s antenna issues, and only affects certain configurations – probably a defining factor in the delay. Some have reported deterioration of around 10% per hour, and although as smartphone users we’ve become used to the high juice consumption, this takes it to a whole new level.

Whatever the due-date, Apple had better get things sorted out pronto, or face the potential wrath of thousands of bemused iPhone 4S owners, whom after spending a small fortune on the device, are left with sub-standard battery retention.

As soon as the 5.0.2 release does arrive, we’ll have it ready for your downloading pleasure, so watch this space!

First Real Facebook Phone From HTC In The Works, Codenamed ‘Buffy’ [REPORT]

Facebook has been actively seeking to tap into the smartphone market for quite some time, and it seems everything is now in place for the concept to become reality.

HTC Facebook phone

We’ve had an inkling for a while now that HTC would be the probable manufacturer, and according to an extensive feature over at AllThingsD, the socially-centered device will be hitting stores sometime between the next 12-18 months.

Neither Facebook nor HTC have opted to comment specifically about the device – operating under the pseudonym “Buffy” for the time being – but a spokesman for the world’s largest social network did say the following:

“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

Having only recently categorically pinpointed HTC (also looked at Samsung as a potential device maker), the Facebook phone, as previously stated, is quite a way from reaching the end-user.

Having said that, it’s certainly rather exciting, and with Mark Zuckerberg’s creation boasting near-on one billion active users – one sixth of the world’s men, women and children – it has a huge potential platform for domination in the fiercely-competitive smartphone market.

If Facebook can manage to persuade consumers that sociability is the key smartphone element – and HTC can deliver the goods in terms of the device (or range of devices) – then the 2013 smartphone market may not be the predictable Android/iOS slog.

Many analysts have stated the importance of Facebook entering the smartphone spectrum in terms of future business. 350 million Facebookers log in via some form of mobile device, most of which use the Facebook app – configured for some 475 separate devices – at convenience as opposed to seeing it as a fundamental aspect of their device.

With Apple electing Twitter as its social partner – bringing an integrated Twitter API to iOS 5, Facebook really needs to gain control of its mobile destiny, and Buffy – whilst not certain to succeed – could theoretically provide the perfect tonic.

The social aspect with Buffy will go much deeper than the many Facebook-focused devices hitherto (HTC Salsa and ChaCha, for example), so look out for another solid challenger for the smartphone title in the next year or so!

Samsung Galaxy S III May Run On Quad-Core Processor [REPORT] [UPDATED]

If the rumor mill carries anything of significance, Samsung’s yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S III could boast an impressive quad-core Exynos 4412 CPU – a move which would really throw down the gauntlet to rival manufacturers.

AndroidAndMe, a site dedicated to covering all things Droid, has done its homework on the device and uncovered information buried in the “Linux Kernel Archives” which seems to suggest that the Korean electronics giant is already at testing stage of the Exynos 4412.

As well as being a lot faster than anything else on the market, it would be more economical with battery consumption – a fundamental aspect of any smartphone. Many current smartphones are home to some great on paper features; but in reality, the battery dies within a few hours – rendering the device useless to power-users.

It would be a relatively significant upgrade from the Galaxy S II’s dual-core 1.2 GHz Exynos 4210 processor, and would use 30% less power than its predecessor.

Citing a tipster, AndroidAndMe reckons Samsung has a few devices set for release early next year that will “blow minds” and will be “big step past the Galaxy Nexus class, in every way,” painting a very exciting picture for the opening quarter of 2012.

The post also toys with the idea of an improved GPU this time around. The Galaxy S II’s Exynos 4210 was armed with the ARM Mali-400 GPU which, at time of release, was the fastest going, but has since been surpassed by Apple’s A5 chip and its PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.

Whatever the case, Samsung will be keen to topple bitter rivals Apple in the battle for the smartphone crown. The Cupertino company has made a lot of noise with its Siri-wielding iPhone 4S, but a quad-core processor would certainly test the fruit company’s resolve.

The alarming exchange of mainly patent-based lawsuits between the two has seen previous business ties completely strained as both try to work independently of each other. It will certainly be a battle worth watching, and all will be covered here at Redmond Pie in due course.

In the meantime, and back on the subject of the purported quad-core S III, would you buy it? Would sheer power and the promise of Ice Cream Sandwich entice you over the bells and whistles of Siri and the brand-new iOS 5?

Leave your thoughts on our Facebook or Google+ pages!

(source GitKernel)

Update: According to a very reliable and trusted source, prototypes of the Samsung Galaxy S III do NOT feature quad-core processors. Our source has inspected the current prototypes, thus we can only presume that the final product – which will probably release early 2012 - will too be bereft of a quad-core processor.
